Despite the many obstacles that might have impeded the 7th annual Navarre Fishing Rodeo, the fishing extravaganza is still a go this weekend.
Navarre Fishing Rodeo is a fishing competition where anglers can fish from anywhere “except the frozen section of the supermarket,” according to the event organizer Sandpaper Marketing. Participants can fish from the shore, a boat, a kayak or the pier. The boundaries are the Destin Pass to the Pensacola Pass.
The tournament starts at 12:01 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, and ends at 4 p.m. the next day. Weigh-in is at Juana’s Pagodas and prizes will be awarded in all divisions. There is even a junior division for anglers who are 12 and under. Young anglers can compete in that division for free with a registered adult angler.
Expect fun and, hopefully, sunny cool temperatures with calm surf.
If you’re not a fisherman, you can always watch the weigh-ins.
Mike Sandler, chair of the Navarre Beach Area Chamber Foundation, said the kid’s division is one of the most significant pieces of the rodeo.
“The young anglers get to come in, sometimes with the very first fish that they caught, and put it up on the scale, so that’s really a lot of fun to watch,” he said.
Last year, more than 527 pounds of fish were caught and over 2,000 people attended the event.
Packet pickup will be at Windjammers on the Pier Friday evening, where anglers can pick up their captain’s bags and complimentary long sleeve Mojo shirts. The Captain’s meeting will be virtual this year.
